Prenatal bonding is a way of developing deep emotional connection and early attachment between parents and their baby. Through a process of conscious relational engagement prior to birth, prenatal bonding supports the mother’s well-being during pregnancy, greater parental unity and improved emotional preparation for parenthood. It also promotes better postpartum outcomes, such as easier breastfeeding, improved sleep for the baby and reduced risk of postpartum depression.

In this course, Clara Cunningham will introduce the foundations, theory, and practical application of prenatal bonding. Together we will explore prenatal bonding through the lenses of pre- and perinatal psychology, attachment, nervous system awareness, and relational responsiveness. Topics include the consciousness and responsiveness of the unborn, limbic development, synchronised nervous systems, the effects of parental stress and trauma on bonding, and examples of ways parents can cultivate connection with their baby during pregnancy.

Clara Cunningham is a biodynamic craniosacral pre- and perinatal therapist and  educator with over twenty years of experience, specializing in work with prenates, newborns, infants, and families.

In this course, Clara will give us a thorough overview of prenatal bonding . You will learn about:

Module 2

Psychological, Relational, and Intergenerational Influences on Prenatal Connection

Monday, 22 June 2026 at 19h - 20h UK time

A mother’s or parent’s ability to develop deep emotional bonding with their unborn can be influenced by a number of factors such as their own difficult birth experience, adversities in childhood, a difficult mother relationship or even trauma in previous generations.

This module looks at these aspects and Clara will show ways in which their impact can be mitigated. We will hear about:

  • working with personal trauma in supportive and resourcing ways
  • taking into account the birth history of mother and father
  • working with transgenerational trauma
  • the role of the parents’ spiritual beliefs and meaning-making
  • opportunities for healing and interrupting inherited relational patterns
