Do Babies Choose Their Parents and the Way They’re Born?

with Ian Rees, John Wilks and Sara Devoy
Monday, 1 June 2026 at 19h UK time
The belief that souls consciously select their families before incarnation and that babies may even choose the circumstances of their own birth is wide spread within the pre- and perinatal field. Where do these ideas come from and why do they resonate so deeply with many birth workers, therapists and parents?

In this conversation, we will look at the origins of the belief in conscious and deliberate incarnation, taking into account ancient spiritual traditions as well as the ground-breaking work of pre- and perinatal psychology pioneers such as Thomas Verny, David Chamberlain, and William Emerson.

With compassion and intellectual honesty, we will also explore the harder questions: What does the soul choice framework mean for families navigating disability, birth trauma, or medical negligence? Can a belief intended to bring meaning and comfort inadvertently introduce blame or obscure the need for things like systemic change in maternity care?

Together, we will endeavour to navigate the crucial distinction between the scientifically supported reality of prenatal consciousness and the spiritual belief in pre-birth soul contracts, and ask how we might hold both with wisdom and care.
