Twin Loss

with Karlton Terry
The vanishing twin syndrome is the loss of a twin or twins during pregnancy, usually in the first trimester, and often times before the mother even knows she's pregnant, let alone carrying twins.

When this happens, the tissues of the miscarried twin are often reabsorbed by the mother's body over time. The loss of a sibling though, even at such an early age, is a significant event, emotionally and psychologically, and it is usually unknown and overlooked and never given the appropriate space for the bereavement process to unfold.

Babies who suffer the loss of a twin (sometimes called a soul mate) in the womb, do so alone.
This phenomenon can underlie maladaptive attachment patterns, belief systems of shame, survivor’s guilt, betrayal, fear of commitment, and unresolved grief that can lead to a lifetime of searching for reconnection to the lost soul.

In this class, Karlton addresses the symptoms and coping strategies that present in twin dynamics, how these dynamics affect the surviving twin’s identity formation, and how to liberate babies from the agony of unresolved twin loss.
