Recapitulation in Pre- and Perinatal Psychology

with Karlton Terry
Recapitulation theory goes back to the 19th century and states that the development of an organism follows the evolution of the species. Applied to developmental psychology, this principle holds that as people develop, they repeat behaviours of their evolutionary ancestors.

William Emerson defined recapitulation as a process whereby individuals unconsciously recreate situations in which early traumatic experiences repeat themselves. Emerson sees the underlying dynamic as the psyche's attempt to process the past trauma in the present.
However, reenactment does not generally lead to healing, only therapeutic support can help the integration of the shock held in the system.

In this class, Karlton shares his take on Emerson's recapitulation theory and show examples of recapitulation dynamics.
