The suffering of the unborn is still largely unacknowledged. Becoming prenatal shadow, it contributes to unconscious patterns that continue the suffering throughout life - until they become conscious.

Working in the pre- and perinatal field means meeting the prenatal shadow in ourselves and in our clients. Recognising this prenatal suffering in shadow requires compassionate, kind, mindful presence that can acknowledge and appreciate what the little one inside has endured.

Cherionna says: “Compassion has been important to me at least since the early 90s when I began practising Vipassana meditation. In the last year, I have become aware of feeling a deepening of my spontaneous compassion, which I believe emerged through being with my own suffering as I grieved the loss of my dear husband.

I have realised that the first Castellino principle of “Welcome” is an important expression of compassion. I have come to see welcome and compassion as the most important element of healing prenatal trauma and meeting the prenatal shadow.”

In this course Cherionna will help us explore the nature of compassion, the prenatal shadow, and how to enhance heart-centered presence to provide more sense of safety. This work can be healing for ourselves as well as a blessing for those we encounter in our lives and work.

The course will include guided meditations and somatic explorations.
Cherionna Menzam-Sills PhD is a Somatic Prenatal and Birth Therapist and author who has taught and facilitated Pre- and Perinatal Psychology/Therapy, Continuum and Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy globally. Her most recent publication is ‘The Prenatal Shadow: Healing the Traumas Experienced before and at Birth’.

In this course, Cherionna will help us:

  • deepen our understanding of prenatal trauma
  • gain greater clarity about how prenatal suffering may occur
  • develop a deeper sense of compassion in the pre- and perinatal context
  • gain increased confidence in meeting prenatal trauma

Module one

Opening the Portal

Monday, 2 November 2026 at 19h - 20h UK time

We all arrive with basic needs of being, including recognition, acknowledgment, unconditional
acceptance, an attuned holding field, and a sense of safety that enables us to simply be. Often, these basic  needs are not fully met.

When we bring compassion to them, either in ourselves or in others, like our  clients, these needs begin to be addressed. We provide a different, more welcoming, nurturing context  than the one that was available during conception, gestation, birth, and beyond. In this class we will  explore what this might mean for each of us and or consider specific clients in our care.

Module three

Addressing prenatally-derived shame with compassion

Monday, 16 November 2026 at 19h - 20h UK time

A posture of shame is easily recognised as being somewhat hunched over a protected heart. Interestingly, this is the same posture that is common when people have not experienced being seen, welcomed, and acknowledged a the time William Emerson has named, “Discovery,” when the pregnancy is confrmed with a pregnancy test.

How can we offer compassion to ourselves and others who may still be hiding, afraid of rejection, fearful of having their sense of  worthlessness discovered? This class promises a rich, potentially deeply healing exploration.
