Perinatal Client Advocacy

Personalised Care with a Peaceful Heart

with Alicia and Meredith
Thursday, 5 March 2026 at 18h UK time
Effective communication and advocacy skills are often missing from basic birth worker trainings, leading to significant challenges for both families and professionals.

Client advocacy requires a deep understanding of both the hospital's culture and the family's culture. A good perinatal client advocate is not only equipped with tools for communication and medical navigation, but is skilled at humanising and connecting everyone in the room.

In this talk, advocate-doulas Alicia Fishbein and Meredith Nelson will give an insight into their advocacy work for birth workers. They show that advocacy is not adversarial: it is powerfully representing the client while building bridges of understanding with the client's chosen team.
