Introduction to focusing

Our body often knows a situation before we have the words to describe it. All we have is a feeling, a vague sense. This is true for our personal life but also in our interaction with clients. The philosopher and psychotherapist Eugene Gendlin  called this clear but unarticulated feeling held in the body the ‘felt sense’. He developed Focusing as an embodied practice that helps us listen to our felt sense with curiosity, compassion, and clarity.

Focusing is a practice that helps us recognise our own inner signals in real time through slowing down and giving space to what arises from within so that our ‘felt sense’ can unfold naturally and bring fresh insights and direction.

Focusing adds an extra dimension to the work we do with our hands and it helps us stay steady when something complex or unexpected arises in a session with a client. It also offers a respectful way to accompany early life imprints – implicit patterns which live in the body as a felt sense - without regression, re‑traumatisation, or interpretation.

In this course, Deirdre Kennedy introduces us to Focusing through presentations and guided practices. You will learn how to pause, sense, and keep company with all our inner parts in a way that supports grounded presence - both in your personal life and in your work with others.
Deirdre Kennedy is a Relational Craniosacral Therapist dedicated to helping people navigate and find solutions to their life’s challenges through an empowering trauma-informed perspective. She supports families, groups, and businesses internationally.

Arriving — Making Space to Listen

In this first module, we begin by stepping out of the busy mind and into the body—creating the conditions for something new to emerge.

Sensing & Relating — Meeting What’s There

This module dives into the heart of the work—learning how to recognise, stay with, and gently respond to what arises from within.

  • How to recognise a felt sense in the body 
  • Finding words, images, or gestures that resonate
  • How to stay with difficult or unclear feelings safely 
  • The attitude of curiosity, patience, and non-judgment 
  • Introduction to parts

Exploring tangles

In this module, you will learn about 'tangles', parts of us that are connected to places of stuckness. They have an existential dimension which can go as deep as our earliest experiences.
