Different Doorway

Birth Learnings of The Caesarean Born Experience

with Jane English
In her pioneering book “Different Doorway: Adventures of a Cesarean Born”, Jane English describes her personal exploration of the physical, social, and psycho-spiritual aspects of being born by what she calls ‘non-labour’ caesarean.  Although Jane’s book was published forty years ago, her visceral reflections are as relevant as ever for all curious about caesarean birth dynamics.

Coming into the world by means of surgery profoundly impacts the baby and person they will become.  In a world where up to 40% of babies are born surgically, depending on the country, developing an understanding of their experience and an appreciation of the differences with vaginal births is both important and enriching.

In this conversation, Jane English shares her personal insights into what it means to be caesarean born with emphasis being on the recognition of the ‘birth learning’ to be gained rather than the trauma to be replayed.
