Our earliest experiences have a fundamental impact on the person we become. Not only do they shape the way we relate to all aspects of our life but they could also arguably influence the way we view human existence in a larger context. This course explores the fascinating question of the relationship between the very beginning of our life and the way we develop spiritual orientation.

Based on decades of working with pre- and perinatal themes Matthew Appleton developed a framework called the ‘Bionuminosum’ designed to help us explore how our connection with the dimension we came from – and will return to – is shaped by the way our incarnation unfolds.

Matthew will show how the trajectory from the pre-personal foundations of our existence (womb life, birth and infancy), through ego development to the integration of these in transpersonal awareness can be disturbed by early wounding .

We will learn why regression and spiritual development are intrinsically linked and how fragmentation in the human psyche can transform through engaging with the 'bionuminosum' as the ground of creation.
Matthew Appleton is a registered Body Psychotherapist and Craniosacral Therapist based in the UK. He has been facilitating Prenatal and Birth Workshops for adults for nearly 20 years. He is the author of 'Transitions to Wholeness - Integrating Prenatal, Transpersonal and Somatic Psychology'.

In this course Matthew will:

  • provide an overview of his map of the human psyche
  • show the connection between our earliest experiences and our spiritual development
  • give an insight into the relevance of regression for spiritual growth
  • explain the concept of the 'bionuminosum' as interface between spirit and matter
  • shed light on how early life influences our relationship with death
  • offer short guided practices

How the Pre- and Perinatal Period Shapes Our Relationship with Spirituality

Thursday, 10 September 2026 at 19h - 19h30 UK time

module one

The Structure of the Human Psyche

Thursday, 24 September 2026 at 19h - 20h UK time
The human psyche is grounded in our embodied experience which, in turn is deeply influenced by how we were conceived, our womb life, our birth journey and the first months of post-birth life.

Using the model of spirit, soul and ego as structure of the psyche, this course module looks at how personal and collective religious and spiritual viewpoints are rooted in and influenced by wounding during these early phases of life.

We will also look at how regression in the service of transcendence can support the psyche to
move from fragmentation to flow.

module two

The Bionuminosum as Spiritual Interface

Thursday, 5 October 2026 at 19h - 20h UK time
The ‘Bionuminosum’ is a term that represents the zone of interface between spirit and matter.

This threshold is the source of powerful archetypal images that operate within us, influencing our
spiritual orientation which can range from monotheism, through Eastern spiritualities, through to atheism.

This course module explores how our early life colours the way we experience the interface between our physical body and environment and the spiritual realm.

We will also look at the phenomenon of spiritual emergence and learn how a person can  get ‘stuck’ between the worlds.

module Three

How Our Birth Shapes How We See Death

Thursday, 29 October 2026 at 19h - 20h UK time
Birth and death are not just the beginning and end of life, but an ongoing process of embodied
impermanence that enables us to flow with life and adapt to change. The degree to which we
can surrender to this is deeply influenced by our physical birth.

In this course module, we will look at the birth process as an initiation, which can build resilience and promote trust in life, or undermine resilience and block our capacity to trust life. We will also see how the way we were born influences our attitudes towards death and the dying process itself.
