Since the birth of Louise Brown, the first ‘test tube’ baby, in 1978 research and development in Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) have made such progress that a pre- and perinatal perspective has become imperative.  ART represents a significant economic sector in our world. The more technology is used to create human life, the more we are called upon to focus on the individual and his or her experience.

In this course, we will look at the impact that the various – sometimes harsh – aspects inherent to ART have on both the parents as well as egg and sperm and consequently the child. We will learn about the innate knowledge the child’s body has regarding its origins, how parents can be supported when they enter this uncharted territory, and challenges a therapist may come up against when working with these families.

Klaus Käppeli will cover this topic also from the perspective of the mystery as to why a soul chooses this arduous and challenging path into the world and touch upon psychological, philosophical, and theological questions.
Klaus Käppeli a certified special needs teacher and psychotherapist with two decades of experience in pre- and perinatal work.

In this course Klaus will provide:

  • an overview of existing ART technologies
  • insight into the child’s innate knowledge of their conception
  • an understanding of the parents’ experience
  • means to support parents on their journey and the family once the child is born
  • insight into the challenges therapists may encounter when working with ART families
  • reflections of psychological, philosophical, and theological nature in this context

class one

ART-Children and Their  Experiences

Monday, 17 November 2025 at 19h UK

The egg and sperm of ART children have to undergo very challenging procedures. In this module, Klaus will show practical examples of how children show the transition to life in a therapeutic setting and what they know about their origins without ever being told about it. Their knowledge is hidden deep in the cells of their bodies and they want to be seen and heard in it.

class two

ART-Parents, Families and Their Experiences

Monday, 24 November 2025 at 19h UK

Parents who have decided to take the path of ART  generally do not know what they are getting into. While they are aware of the formal sequences of this kind of conception, emotionally, they enter uncharted territory. In this module, Klaus shows how to support parents. We will learn how ART affects the couple’s relationship and the relationship to their children.

class three

Therapeutic Challenges and how to Work with ART-Situations

Monday, 1 December 2025 at 19h UK

When working with children conceived through ART, the therapist is met with feelings of boundary violation, loneliness, abandonment, and separation to name only the most important ones. We meet many double binds in dealing with ART- issues. In this module, we look at these challenging factors, especially in the context of transference and countertransference.
