Our earliest embodied beginnings and relational experiences continue to shape our capacity for presence, connection, safety, and belonging. Our earliest memories are implicit and therefore beyond the reach of the rational mind. Art Therapy gives us a portal into this realm.

Senior Art Therapist and lecturer Marianne Adams is the creator of a visual framework for exploring relational experience and therapeutic encounter which she calls 'Mapping Beyond Certainty'. This work invites us into a felt-sense knowing through the use of image-making as a way of making visible the hidden relational landscapes that live beneath our words and ways of being.

Through experiential practice, reflective inquiry, and visual clinical material, we will learn how we can gain a greater understanding of our inner experience and interpersonal encounters but also of the therapeutic process, thus deepening our capacity for grounded, attuned, and transformative presence.

Marianne Adams is a Senior Art Psychotherapist, lecturer with over 30 years of clinical practice, 20 years of teaching in Art Therapy.

In this course Marianne will help us:

This opening experiential session introduces Art Therapy as a way of deepening therapeutic presence through embodied awareness, felt sense, and image-making.

Beginning from the understanding that our earliest beginnings shape how we come to experience safety, connection, and relationship, Marianne invites us to explore our present-moment experience through creative process and reflection.

Through carefully crafted experiential practice this session opens the journey into the hidden relational landscapes that quietly inform every (therapeutic) encounter.

Building on the experiential foundations of the first session, this lecture explores the specific 'Mapping Beyond Certainty' framework in greater depth.

Using this model, Marianne will outline the fundamental architecture of our internal world and illustrate through her own artwork and adoption history how this psycho-geography might be specifically shaped by cumulative experience.

With an emphasis on right-hemispheric awareness and embodied tracking, this session offers a visual language for understanding one's own live presence. Participants will be invited to imagine and reflect upon their personal dynamic archaeology.

In this final session, the framework comes alive through visual clinical material showing how early rupture continues to shape relational life, and how sustained therapeutic presence can offer the relational ground to support clients' creativity, integration and transformation.

We will explore how embodied welcome, relational safety, and attuned therapeutic encounter can create the conditions for growth and new ways of being. You will also be invited to use the mapping framework creatively to reflect on a relational encounter from your own experience, deepening understanding through image and embodied reflection.
